In an age of streaming services, media consolidation, and reconsiderations about the future of copyright law, much attention is on how copyright law can be used or abused by corporations.
For example, the US Copyright Office has recently floated the question of implementing an upload filter on internet platforms in the name of protecting copyright.
This week, the revolving door between giant corporations and the government spun once again as the US Copyright Office has announced a new General Counsel, who was previously the deputy general counsel for The Walt Disney Company.
Shira Perlmutter, the Register of Copyrights, has named Suzanne Wilson the new General Counsel and Associate Register of Copyrights for the US Copyright Office. She will assume office on January 31, 2022.
“I am delighted to welcome Suzy to this important role,” said Perlmutter in a statement. “She brings to the Copyright Office deep knowledge and expertise in copyright law, litigation, and technology and will be a valuable addition to our senior management team.”
Wilson was previously responsible for protecting Disney’s intellectual property and could signal how the government plans to approach copyright over the next few years, likely continuing the move in the favor of rights holders.
